Supplements: The Clue's in the Name
They are meant to supplement, not replace
Supplements are a multi-million pound industry, but which ones does your body need (if any)? For how long should you take them? At what dosage? Supplements are a complex subject. This article from a UK NHS oncologist claims synthetic supplements could increase your cancer risk. First time we’ve heard that one. Do consult a qualified medical professional before embarking on a radical program.
Juicing’s been a habit for many years now. This one’s on trend with festive times: Beets, lemon, apple, turmeric, ginger and filtered water.
Multivitamins – as nature intended.
This is where the filtered water came from. We’ve had an Ecofiltro clay pot with its stainless steel casing, for 18 months now. No plastic, no electricity, just naturally cleaned water, with 99% of the ‘nasties’ removed.
Look at the tap water and you’ll see with your own eyes why a water filter is sadly a necessity.
‘Clear as a bell’ it is not.
‘Free from Microplastics’. ‘Removes 99% of PFAS’. Ecofiltro’s test results are published on their site. When you read articles about shockingly high levels of PFA’s (forever chemicals) in our blood, you’ll see why that matters.
A recent BBC Panorama episode exposed the terrifying reality.
This Christmas-y breakfast was full of natural vitamins too: organic oats, plant-based milk, chia seeds, dates, pomegranate and cranberries.
Eating 30+ different plant foods per week will do a good job of lowering your body’s need for supplements. Particularly if those plant foods are organic. ‘A whole food, plant-based diet, rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential nutrients, can fuel the body’s natural healing mechanisms, restore metabolic health, and drastically reduce the risk of chronic illness.’
We’ve found a link to the watch the entire film, for free, here. We’ve added it to our Nutrition Film Resource too. It’s also currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
An AI oncologist. Reality on the horizon? Congratulations Carol. Supplements certainly didn’t fuel your cancer!
The season of over-consumption is upon us. This Vinted advertisement is certainly food for thought.
How Ed Sheeran lost 14kg and got in the best shape of his life: ’10 years ago I was a beer guzzling, kebab munching smoker. Having kids really made me knock all those bad habits on the head (excuse the pun), and I got heavily into exercise and moderation. I started off this year doing dry Jan, and just carried on being sober and exercising.’
This year’s lack of over-consumption suits you Mr Sheeran. Our Disorders and Addictions resource can help get you started.
Some ideas for us for January:
Healthy eating has been a habit for a while now.
This was a simple healthy soup: Leeks, potatoes, vegetable stock, cooked until softened. Then blended, soy cream added and topped with day old baguette and chives from the garden.
If you’re contemplating a vegan lifestyle, or need support in maintaining one, you may be interested in this new book. Denise got to meet Ed Winters this time last year. She was very impressed with his own commitment to this lifestyle. He says: ‘I wrote this book to be a helpful companion for people looking to go vegan and for people who have already made the change, and I really hope it fulfills that aim. The purpose of the book is not only to make going vegan easier, it’s to make being vegan easier.’
Regenerative farming is one way to get our soils more vitamin-rich. Let’s see where this initiative leads us. Dr Zach Bush has much to say on the subject over on our Sustainability resource.
This season is far from festive for some. Here’s a timely reminder from poetess Donna Ashworth.
One of your ‘favourite Christmas movies’ may well feature this lady. ‘The Holiday’ is well loved.
We love her sentiments here. Go Kate!
Those little pomegranate jewels seem to give any dish a Christmas-y feel. This one’s another multivitamin treat. Shiitake mushrooms with quinoa and Thai basil from a pot that’s been brought in to stay frost-free this winter. First time we’ve managed to keep basil alive!
